After 10 years in the role, EastEnders actor Jake Wood has revealed that he has been replaced as the voice of the Geico Gecko.

The star took to Twitter to announce his disappointment at the news, adding that the change saw “10 years undone in an instant”.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is the new voice of the geico gecko. 10 years undone in an instant ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜ž https://t.co/1WhogcOHzt

The new voiceover is a far cry from the Cockney accent the Geico Gecko used to sport under Wood’s engagement, and led to a number of furious fans venting their anger on Twitter.

Wood even got involved with one social media exchange and explained the reason behind the voice swap, saying: “Hi. Geico sacked me because I refused a huge pay cut. Nice huh?”

The Geico Gecko is the American equivalent of Compare the Market’s Aleksander Orlov – so imagine his voice being replaced, and you’ll get a sense of how the American public are feeling right now:โ€‹

The Geico gecko has a new voice and everything I thought I knew is wrong.

In the UK, Wood is best known for his role as Max Branning in EastEndersย although the star is currently taking a year-long break from the show and his temporary final scenes were broadcast in October.

Wood will return to EastEnders next year, but in the meantime you can re-live the experience of his iconic accent in the Geico Gecko advert below:
